Till last year Diu had been importing about 73 percent of the power to fulfill its requirement. Gujrat exported this power. The city has now developed a 9 Megawatt solar park. The park is spread over an area of 50 hectares of barren land. The rooftop installations in 79 government buildings also give their contribution of about 1.3 Megawatt annually. The data is released by Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry.
This major step has made Diu the first city in India that runs on 100 percent Renewable Energy during the day. Diu smart city has set a benchmark for the other cities. A subsidy of about Rs 10,000 to 50,000 is given to the residents of Diu for installation of 1.5 kW rooftop solar panels.
13,000 tonnes of carbon emissions are reduced every year. Power tariffs in the city have also been reduced by 10 percent in the residential category last year and 15 percent in this year. Other cities working in this line are Bengaluru Smart City which has implemented an improved traffic management system. Jaipur Smart City Ltd has planned to develop night bazaar at Chaura Rasta. The Bazaar would register upto 700 vendors who will set up their stalls. The timing of the bazaar would be from 9 pm to 1 am. The bazaar would provide entertainment, food, culture, and shopping after office hours.
